The Choice Is Yours

I’ve left an open letter taped upon your door. I’m praying it finds you in good spirits, not thrown away onto the floor and ignored.

The Choice Is Yours

The Choice Is Yours

So, you’re grown now and nobody can tell you what to do. People can only suggest. You’re sweet like the scent of morning rain. People complement the things you do. They stop, smile, point and stare. I’m sure you’re aware. There’s not one dumb ounce in your soul. You’re a leader by nature. Others gravitate around you like a nucleus, electrons orbiting, protons and neutrons to a molecule. People you’ve impressed tend to say, “You’re smart as hell,” as you make them see the world and themselves differently. Many of them look up to you and pray for you to excel. They see a bright future and expect for you to do well.

However, there are a few things about you I’m sure some don’t know. You hang with the wrong crowd; the ones that hold you down. You say you’re defending others but there’s a lot of fist fighting going on. There’re those that fight in groups. Then there’s the people who pick up a gun and shoot. The police seem to always harass you and you wonder why. Beware of the company you keep along with those who creep and tend to do you harm. Then you say, “You’re just having fun.” You’re staying out late, drinking, partying, smoking and having random sex. I often wonder what will be next.

There’s always consequences for every action. Just keep in mind there’s responsibility one has to make and take, not only for yourself but for those around you. Remember, I love you.

So you’re taking off a semester, maybe one or maybe two. I can’t help to think of all the things you’ll be missing while taking time off from school. You plan to get a job, make a little money and party hard and do it all over again. A job is nothing but work with a dimly lit future. Trust me when I tell you, I have one of those. Let’s keep it real. Your current game plan projects to failure and hardship. Dropping out of college at this alarming rate and current mindset you’re going to come up short of your goals. Please hear what is meant. This is merely a written letter of concern and intent.

It seems you are giving up. You’re not happy with yourself coming up short of your goals and in your personal life. Some of your friends that you went to school with seem to be doing better then you. They’ve graduated college and have a career while you still live at home with your parents. Let the truth be told your life is spiraling downward. You don’t see it now because you think time is on your side. Keep in mind, time waits for no one, time changes constantly. I want you to know, I’m your biggest fan and I believe in you. Please excuse me for putting it bluntly.

I know you don’t want to admit it but it’s called depression. Trust me I know. It starts off as just having fun, hanging out and enjoying life. But what you’re smoking only clouds your reality. After you eat, fall asleep and wake up, your problems and issues don’t go away. They’re waiting for you and they will never go away until you confront and resolve them. The partying will never end and before you know it years will have passed. I’m begging you to think differently. Tomorrow is not promised to no one. There’s a question I would like to ask. How about making the ultimate sacrifice and finish school today to start your career now instead of doing it tomorrow? Afterwards, you could party hardy. Think about it. It’s only four years of your life. Maybe five years. After that, the world and all that’s in it, is yours. All my wealth shared is unconditional with no strings attached.

I know you don’t want to hear you’re following in the footsteps as your father whose life was full of regrets. He never finished any he started, always came up short and full of excuses. He blamed everyone but himself. Don’t let your manhood/womanhood pride prevent you from reaching out for guidance and help. There’s a lesson to be learn in other people’s failure. I love you more today than yesterday but not as much as tomorrow.

When you come to a fork in the road, you don’t go left or right. You go straight, the least traveled route. You have the awesome power to change and save yourself from making the same mistakes of the past. I beg you to choose to save your own life before it’s too late.
Pour out the old, you. Discover all you can do. It’s in your hands. It’s all up to you. Start a campaign and protest against your old self but first I urge and challenge you to find yourself. It’s a fight I’m sure you can win.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. It’s not easy to leave the only place you know. I understand how you can’t see the forest for the trees but life is all about growth and stepping out of our comfort zone, so a new life can begin. You are the brightest star in my life, a treasure that I will cherish and love for the rest of my life. This is not a reprimand. Just some friendly advice.

The choice is yours.

Dare to seek how deep the rabbit hole goes.
